🚗 Getting There + Auto Insurance {#transport}

Driving from the U.S.

Puerto Peñasco is an easy drive from the southwestern U.S.—and half the fun is the journey.

From

Approx. Drive Time

Phoenix, AZ

4 hours

Tucson, AZ

5 hours

San Diego, CA

6.5 hours

Los Angeles, CA

8 hours

  • Route: Take I-8 west to Gila Bend, then Highway 85 south to Lukeville/Sonoyta border crossing. From there, it's a straight shot on Highway 8 to Puerto Peñasco.
  • Border crossing hours: Lukeville is open 24/7, but avoid peak times (Friday afternoons, Sunday evenings) for shorter waits.

⚠️ Mandatory: Mexican Auto Insurance

Your U.S. auto insurance is NOT valid in Mexico. It's required by law—and if you're in an accident without it, you could face serious legal and financial trouble.

We partner with Baja Bound because they make it easy:

  • Buy online in minutes
  • English‑speaking support
  • Affordable rates for short trips or annual coverage
  • Real claims assistance if you need it

Don't skip this. Seriously. It's a few dollars a day for peace of mind.

✈️ Flying In

Puerto Peñasco has a small airport (PPE) with limited flights. Most visitors fly into Phoenix (PHX) or Tucson (TUS) and drive. Rental cars are available at both airports.

🧠 Local Tips {#tips}

Insider knowledge from the Penasco Pulse community.

Money

  • Cash is king – Many smaller shops, taco stands, and markets prefer pesos or U.S. dollars (cash).
  • ATMs are available but may charge fees. Bring enough cash for meals and small purchases.
  • Credit cards accepted at most hotels and larger restaurants.

Language

English is widely spoken in tourist areas, but learning a few Spanish phrases goes a long way:

  • Gracias – Thank you
  • Por favor – Please
  • ¿Dónde está el baño? – Where is the bathroom?
  • La cuenta, por favor – The check, please

Safety

  • Puerto Peñasco is generally very safe for tourists.
  • Use common sense: lock your car, don't leave valuables on the beach, and stick to well-lit areas at night.
  • The Safe Corridor program has increased security along the highway from the border.
